Bunter is still raiding tuck and a dunce in class. The earliest episodes were live performances, broadcast in two timeslots: Quelch ; Julian Yardley Harry Wharton. As was to become the custom, the opening chapter begins with dialogue. In Maythe BBC Children’s Department made public its plans to screen a series of half-hour television shows featuring Billy Bunter as the principal character.

For some reason Quelch has described Bunter as poor in class, slack at games, untruthful, and a pilferer of tuck.


And often there is not reference in the latter books to bjlly events in the earlier books. If it isn’t quite perfect, is anything in this imperfect world? I had read only one Billy Bunter story before – in my blily – when I had found a dog-eared copy of “Billy Bunter comes for Christmas” at a local raddiwala.

I probably had a better opinion of it then. Young Melvyn Hayes played Skinner to the life, and yet it seemed that all of his later roles were nice guys.
