However I found this a bit underwhelming.

The stories themselves are not written expertly enough to keep the mystery alive until the end – I found myself figuring out the who-did-it in many stories way before the duncehead Ajit or the writer chose to reveal it. However, although the stories were indeed entertaining, I do wish that I had a fuller collection. The only other person living with him, is his attendant, Putiram. I loved the second story in this book, very intriguing. Bansyopadhyay stories are all written in traditional Bengali language but later stories shift to colloquial language. Thus he fashioned a new name for himself and had it inscribed on a brass plate in front of his house.


It was the author’s imagination, that the detective even assisted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in his secret missions which was found to be written in one of the Byomkesh stories. I’m going to look for other translations of his work, though, to see if they read better than this one did. Hints or description are too obvious so doesnt hold much suspense till end.

It is also mentioned that Byomkesh did not like being called a detective, and the word ‘investigator’ was even worse. Saradindu Bandopadhyay is a wonderful writer and has created a marvel that continues to leave its opponents in the dust.

Sharadindu gives away the plot while using devices in every story making it easy to predict. The language is fluid and the stories are fast-paced. The book was a disappointment.
