Like the stale odor of an old dog fart. I’m pretty sure the attendant killed the landlady, but he doesn’t defend himself because he doesn’t know how to act with other HUmans.
His novels were influenced by expressionism and psychoanalysis and was praised by Thomas Mannwho became a godfather to Ungar’s son Tom born Thomas Michael Ungar. Jan 08, Mariel rated it liked it Recommends it for: Todo un descubrimiento gracias a Offuscatio.
The Maimed by Hermann Ungar
I liked it for its novelty, a novel exploring, excruciatingly, the short life story and psychosis of the supremely emasculated man. His brother and parents were put to death at Auschwitz inbut his sister was able to escape and went to Tel-Aviv. One of only two novels Ungar wrote, this translation marks the first time this important novel and any of his work has been translated into English. This was like a combination of the short effects of being scared or horny and taken waaaay too long.
During the First World War he was called up and wounded in the front. It starts out very Kafkaesque of coursewith our protagonist suffering through strange things outside his control, trapped in a system that he can’t navigate. Franz seems to dread everything in life so intensely, and often his worst suspicions come true. Like Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory only more so. That could have been the best ever comparison I’ve ever made on goodreads.
I don’t know if anyone else on goodreads is a fan of Canadian sketch comedy show Kids in the Hall? Everyone else probably said Kafka. While this This was a unique, weird read. I really felt like there were things I hadn’t figured out until it was clearly spelled out, things fell into place.
Chiunque fosse, aveva ragione. Karl Fanta, a friend of Polzer’s childhood, rich, cynical and invalid, and Sonntag, his nurse, an exalted religious and an old slaughterer, settled in Klara Porges’ house.
It is obvious early on that Franz is almost certainly homosexual. Not strong enough for a woman.
Return to Book Page. This is from my Amazon review: As his relationship with Frau Porges progresses, it becomes more humiliating. He nermann saw Frau Porges during the day, when she was fully clothed.
From that moment he continued to devote himself to literature and, in addition to narrations, he wrote two novels and two plays, among which he undoubtedly stands out entitled The Red General The climax is violent and quite horrific, but unresolved: Then one night he sees his hermaann leaving his aunt’s room and believes that they are having an affair. Paperbackpages. Between and he was secretary of legation in Berlin.
Polzer avoided his eyes.
He also fears something being stolen which he will later not even realize he’s missed. Doesn’t that sound like fun? I particularly like Dave Foley in this skit.
The ending was also a but confusing and absurd, maybe as intended by the author mutllados, but ultimately a fascinating read for everyone who likes Kafka, Ungwr and Dostojevskij. She had put out the light and was sleeping beside him. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
The ending is supposed to be ‘ambiguous’ but this edition includes a separately published ‘Fragment’ that removes the ambiguity, and I like the closure, and am glad it was included.
Hermann Ungar – Wikipedia
It is a book that cries out for some sort of psychoanalytic analysis — and that should be resisted: This guy doesn’t get any love he can ask for. It is hermnn too bad if no one knows what I’m talking about. I suppose if one has to become a sexual slave it might as well be to a fat woman.
Now a paraplegic and rotting away from some unknown disease, he has become a hostile and paranoid man He confides in only in Franz and the weight mutilaxos this is unpleasant and intimidating for Franz.
It is extremely well rendered.
But it is not the worn in feeling at home but it couldn’t go anywhere or at least would not be afraid to if it was going to go that way. Hwrmann Attendant’s character is great, really impressed me, his role and motivation in everything. It was as though he had slept with his sister. I like to guess my way through a story.
